Sinking

Until you’ve made a deal with the devil to get God off your back
because only the devil would listen.

Until you’ve heard the whispers of beings not there
and know too well the tongues they speak in.

until you’ve pulled the covers over your head
until you’ve played your last card from a balcony edge
until you’ve hit the bottom only to find that it’s not
until you’ve looked in the mirror and see that you’ve lost
every last loved one you thought you had who
couldn’t stay with you to see it all through…

Until you’ve felt sorrow that lays on the floor
while the world shuffles by outside the door
quietly pressing the life from your soul
silently etching and taking its toll
killing the part that could fight for the light
you don’t know what it’s like to watch yourself die.
